My year is :-
1974
1974 - Jo was 8. She had complete the Infant Stage at Primary School and was then in the Juniors. Jo was put into a mixed age class with the majority of the children being the year above. Jo discovered the more grown-up pursuits of Top of the Pops and the merits of the Bay City Rollers versus David Essex. Jo was a Rollers fan and owned the jacket (made by Mum), the maroon trousers, the scarf, the socks, the pendant and the printed T-shirt with their photo and her name across the top (from Great Yarmouth seafront market). These were all worn with pride for the School Discos.
I, on the other hand, being older, was not a fan of the world's most tartanest boy band.
In 1974, I was 13, and listening to
and
Pretty much still am come to think of it. Here, a little audio treat for you.
When I wasn't listening to music I was watching these guys
And reading this
A brilliant, bittersweet, multifaceted, sparkling diamond of a novel which makes a lot of recent popular YA stuff look dull, predictable and amateurish (why yes Twilight, I am talking about you), and which has stayed with me ever since.
Not really now, not any more
If you've read it, you'll know what that means.
I am not going to inflict what I was wearing on you.
You're welcome
Aaargh! I forgot the stitched picture bit! I was supposed to include something I'd stitched that I thought would appeal to Jo. I found the piece, lifted it out and forgot to photograph it. What a numpty!
Here you go. Bonus points for anyone who can guess which other book from my youth inspired this design
I have enjoyed learning more about you AND Jo, Christine!!
ReplyDeleteGreat post I like your taste in music :)
ReplyDeleteChristine,
ReplyDeleteI sure wish we could see Jo in her outfit. I love your taste in music and I STILL listen to those bands today. Monty Phython could always make my Dad laugh. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for taking part in the Birthday Blog Hop. But where's my stitched picture?
ReplyDeleteYou were way cooler than me and had much better taste in music too. I still have the BCR jacket, maybe I should take a photo!
Love Monty Python too. Life of Brian was the first 18 film I saw. I recently introduced the Large Boy to it too. I figured he's at High School, he's heard the profanity by now!
What? No fair not posting a clothing picture!
ReplyDeleteLike your taste in music. And why no description of your clothes - at 13 we all make such fabulous wardrobe choices!
ReplyDeleteGreat post and great taste in music. Queen, in particular, is a big favorite around here to this day. Few people can sing the way Freddie could.
ReplyDeleteNice to know about you and your choices! About YA reading stuff, I agree with your views.
ReplyDeleteI was a BCR fan like Jo and yes, I had the tartan trousers made by my mum.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I have a design very similar to that but its green in colour on the chart?? been languishing in the box for goodness knows how long.
Haaaaah, you should've inflicted your choices of clothing on us. I'm sure you were at the most stylish point in your life; don't all 13-year-olds agree with this? :D
ReplyDeleteThank you for the gorgeous stitched picture, worth waiting for!
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing The Hobbit, it's Smaug on his mound of treasure.
Excellent post and great music choices. I still wasn't born yet, but still listen to that music as well. I haven't read that book, so I will have to check it out, thank you for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteI was a BCR fan too... but unfortunately for me living in the world downunder I didn't get to see them except on TV!! I had a tartan hat, scarf (I still wear a tartan scarf in winter!) pillowcase.. I was even a member of the UK fan club - oh those were the days!
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
Hugs xx
I have found this book on Amazon and it has been placed on my must read. I did read the Twilight Series (as an adult) and enjoyed it. So I believe I will enjoy this one.
ReplyDeleteIs that a dragon on your cross stitch piece? It is a great piece but do not know what inspired it
I'm hopping along on the blog hop. What a fun post. Thanks for sharing. Love your stitched piece.
ReplyDeleteA lovely post with lots to read, to look at and to listen to for Jo's birthday.
ReplyDeleteI definitely liked Queen then and Alan Garner was on my reading list too.
